Analysis of Tsvetaeva’s poem “Here is the window again …”

Here’s the window again … ”Marina Tsvetaeva
Here is the window again
Where do not sleep again.
Can – drink wine,
Maybe – so sit.
Or simply – hands
Do not separate the two.
In every home, friend,
There is a window like that.
Not from the candle, from the lamps darkness lit:
From sleepless eyes!
Creek raskluk and meetings –
You, the window in the night!
Maybe hundreds of candles
Maybe three candles …
No and no mind
My peace.
And in my house
It was got such.
Pray, friend, for a sleepless home,
Out the window with fire!
In 1916, after a stormy romance with Sophia Parnok, Marina Tsvetaeva returned to her husband Sergey Efron, although she was aware that her married life would hardly be happy. In the same period, the poetess creates a cycle of poems entitled “Insomnia,” which includes the work “Here’s a solder window …”. It is dedicated to the inner experiences of the author, who find it difficult to come to terms with the imperfections of the surrounding world and find the strength to continue living the same way as before – serenely, easily and joyfully.
“Here again there is a window where they are not sleeping again,” this phrase indicates Tsvetaeva’s attempt to generalize human experiences. She seems to be trying to put herself on a par with other people, to hide in a crowd so as not to push out her own pain. According to the poetess, everyone in life has such moments when insomnia comes. And then in the houses at night the windows shine, behind which there are people with their thoughts and feelings. “Maybe they drink wine, maybe they sit like that,” notes Tsvetaeva. There are also happy exceptions, when sleepless nights give two people a feeling of love and spiritual unity.
The luminous window becomes for the poetess a symbol of a wide variety of experiences. After all, insomnia is the result of our emotions, which can be both positive and negative. “The cry of separation and meetings – you are a window into the night!”, The author notes. At the same time, it does not matter at all whether a single candle is burning behind the glass, or the room is brightly lit from the inside, resembling Christmas illumination. Behind every such light lies sorrows and troubles, happiness and joy of meeting with close people. And each such light carries mental confusion, is a consequence of insomnia, which has recently become a frequent guest of Marina Tsvetaeva. “And in my house such things started,” she notes, pointing out that her own window has recently also been glowing in the dark, being a kind of beacon for lonely passersby. But they do not care about other people’s experiences, and this is not surprising. Nevertheless, the poet still appeals to an unknown passerby: “Pray, friend, for a sleepless house, outside the window with fire!” More recently, it would also pass by a luminous window rectangle, but now she knows from her own experience how insomnia is insidious, and how much trouble she can bring to a person deprived of emotional balance, tranquility and peace.

Times change, but the main, most important themes of poetry remain unchanged. Often, reading Lermontov or Akhmatova, we are surprised to find out in a few lines our own feelings…
